General Information
From the Principal
It was a fun and uplifting start to Term 4 with our focus on Mental Health and Wellbeing and this set us all up for the unusual second week of term with the short lockdown and mandatory mask wearing. Students quickly responded to the new directive and embraced the change with their usual resilience. We will continue to adapt to the challenges of COVID going forward and know that our key strategies of high rates of vaccination, good personal hygiene practices, physical distancing and short lockdowns (as needed) will continue to keep us all safe. Thank you all for your support and understanding as we work through these challenges together.
Congratulations to all the students who have excelled in so many different areas over this term and have made the most of the many opportunities to participate in college and extracurricular activities. As students prepare for external assessments, remember to make the most of the support available to you from tutorials, online tips and advice to specialist individual help from our Student Support and Wellbeing team.
We wish our Year 12 Leavers all the best for the future, and we hope that you have many happy memories from your time at college and that you made some lasting friendships that will stay with you as you step into the next exciting stage of your life. We look forward to welcoming our year 11 students back in 2022 after the holidays and will be emailing out course confirmations and other important information in early December.
Stay safe everyone!
Tracy Siedler
Principal
Celebration Assembly
Home Group on Wednesday November 3 was spent on the college green, celebrating the HoCo year as it drew to a close for all our current students in our annual Celebration Assembly. We were treated to lots of live music, sports reports, slushies, veggie burgers, a taster performance from the 2022 musical "Cry Baby", and of course, the annual Staff Song. This year it was the "HoCo Sea Shanty". Tracy provided great advice for all to consider as we farewelled our Year 12 students with a guard of honour.
The highlight this year was the symbolic burning of the art installation by Emma Horswill which had been on display in A Block since 2020. The artwork was made up of a very large steel frame with thousands of pieces of paper from Emma's assignments and lecture notes. Students were able to add their own notes citing things that they were letting go of as they leave Hobart College. It was a spectacular way to finish the assembly.
HoCo Teachers Shine at ACEL Awards
Hobart College congratulates teachers Marjorie Morgan (AST Science) and Wendy Irvine (Assistant Principal) on winning awards at the recent Australian Council for Educational Leaders (ACEL) Tasmanian Branch Awards Ceremony.
ACEL TAS honours those educational leaders who, in the view of their peers, have made a significant contribution to the understanding and practice of educational leadership. Marjorie was presented with the "Teacher Leadership" Award and Wendy the "Excellence in Educational Leadership" Award.
Congratulations to you both!
International Dinner
The International students enjoyed an unplanned “masked ball” recently. Despite the need for masks, it was a fabulous night of student performances, delicious food, countless photos and excellent company. The evening was a special way to celebrate our students’ achievements over the past year and wish our Year 12s all the best as they leave us for their next adventure.
News from the Maths and Science Area
Success in the Maths Relay
Congratulations to our Maths Relay teams who took out first AND second place on the weekend of 28-20 August in the annual Schools Maths Relay competition. A wonderful achievement considering there were 30 teams competing! Thank you to teachers Yohann and Cass who supported the students throughout the event.
Sudoku Competion a hit
Hobart College held a Sudoku Championship competition in September with over fifty students competing. It was a highly contested competition with the overall winner being Narryna Nichols and Tabitha Glowacki and Max Bishop in second place. Congratulations to all who participated!
Chemis-tree Competition
E Block played host to our wonderful Christmas Chemis-tree. Students were challenged to see if they could match the chemical names (provided) to the coloured chemicals in the flasks. The competition has been running since 2018 and no student or teacher has been able to correctly name all 15 chemicals.
Congratulations to everyone that entered the 2021 competion. No-one was able to correctly name all of the chemical names but the winners were:
- First place: Flynn Gorman (winner of three metres of Toblerone)
- Second place: Sean Wilson
- Equal third place: Mitchell, and Mary and Ruby
Mathematics Certificate Presentation
This year Hobart College students entered five maths competitions. Some students were keen and entered all five, others just one or two. Several students performed very well earning Distinction and High Distinction awards. The Tasmanian competitions were the Tasmanian Problem Solving and the M.L. Urquhart. National competitions were the Computational and Algorithmic Thinking and the Australian Maths Competition. There was one international competition, the Kangarou Sans Frontiers. The HoCo Mathematics department hosted a certificate presentation lunch to celebrate the outstanding achievements of these students.
Success at the International Chemistry Quiz and Tritration Competition
The International Chemistry Quiz, organised by the Royal Australian Chemical Institute (RACI), involves challenging questions encompassing many areas of Chemistry. This year 95,000+ students participated from over 20 countries.
Congratulations to the following six students from Hobart College who took part in the 2021 ICQ: Elijah Hughes; Minh Vo; Yuvani Pal; Shay-Lee Phillips Nocera; Nathan Smith; and Claudia Weerts.
And special congratulations to Nathan, Elijah, Minh Vo and Yuvani Pal, on receiving particularly high results:
- Nathan Smith, Year 12 – achieved a High Distinction (and top 96 percentile in Australia)
- Elijah Hughes, Year 11 – achieved a High Distinction (and top 92 percentile in Tasmania)
- Minh Vo, Year 11 – achieved a High Distinction (and top 92 percentile in Tasmania)
- Yuvani Pal, Year 11 – achieved a Distinction (and top 83 percentile in Tasmania)
Hobart College was also well represented with 16 students competing in the RACI Tritration Competition with the following students achieving certificates of excellence:
- Freya Greenwood
- Minh Vo
- James McEwan
- Claudia Weerts
- Ross Di Bari
The team consisting of Claudia, Ross and Jacob O'Niell also qualified for the National Final and competed well against some tough competition. Congratulations to all students who participated in this event.
HoCo @ Taroona High School stem_next expo
We will be featuring Hobart College’s STEAM offerings at the Taroona High School stem_next expo on November 18. Come and visit us between 4-7pm. If you can help us run the stall let Marjorie know as soon as possible: marjorie.morgan@education.tas.gov.au. It looks great on your CV and a chance to see your old teachers if you’re an ex-student!
Maths/Science Tutorial Program
This term we celebrated a fantastic year of tutorials with a tutorial party on Friday 15 October. We were able to briefly distract our hardworking students with delicious snacks and lucky door prizes. Congratulations to all tutorial attenders this year – your hard work and dedication to your studies is an inspiration to us all. Thank you to the tutorial teachers for supporting students throughout the year, and for taking on the heartbreaking task of kicking students out of E Block by 4.30pm, even on a Friday afternoon! Thanks also to those teachers who regularly get flagged down and roped into giving extra assistance.
Tutorials will run in D Block (D306 and D333) throughout the exam period. See our timetable below.
Art Exhibitions
End of Year Student Art Exhibition
The annual Art Exhibition will be done a little differently this year with parents and friends invited to attend on the final day of the exhibition. The exhibition will be open for viewing on Thursday 18 November between 10am and 4pm. There will be a closing speech by Tracy Siedler, Principal of Hobart College, at 3:30pm.
All parents and friends must sign in at the front office of A block and also use the check in app. They must be accompanied by their young person.
For any queries, please contact the front office on 6220 3133. We look forward to sharing the amazing work the Visual Arts students have produced this year.Connected Dialogues Exhibition: Moonah Arts Centre
Currently on show at the Moonah Arts Centre is an exhibition titled Connected Dialogues. The artists in the exhibition include three members of the Hobart College Art Department: Jane Hodgetts, Belinda Winkler and Eloise Kirk, along with one of our wonderful parents and UTAS Object Design Mentor, Sara Lindsay, as well as Hobart artist and designer, Sarah Stubbs.
Connected Dialogues is an exhibition of intimately scaled objects exploring the material-led and physical act of making. This group of artists aim to draw connections between notions of assemblage; past, present, and future.
Connected Dialogues is open to the public until Saturday 13 November.
'Zero for the Young Dudes' performance
The Theatre Performance class proudly presented Alistair McDowall’s play Zero for the Young Dudes as a part of their final external assessment on Thursday 14 October to a public audience. The engaging performance of this contemporary script was the culmination of the year's study with students demonstrating their growth in theatre performance. The story followed the inmates at a bizarre summer camp who are plotting a revolution. Supported by the Technical Theatre class, the set, lighting and sound design enchanced the performance and the audience were left feeling somewhat uneasy about the drama unfolding on stage. Congratulations to all invovled.
Health and Wellbeing Expo
Wow! What a great way to start Term 4 with our Health Expo as a part of Mental Health Week! The theme of ‘Awareness, Belonging, Connection’ was very evident as staff and students checked in with the wide range of local health services, chilled on the new beanbags and treated themselves to donuts, ice-cream, lentil dahl and drinks from the food vans. With special guest band ‘Uncle Gus and the Rimshots’ blasting out their high energy tunes through HG and lunch, the place was buzzing with positivity.
Special thanks to the HoCo Student Services team for putting together a fantastic program and to the following organisations who came along to promote positive health and wellbeing:

News from HPOE
2021 College Lap
We were blessed with beautiful weather for the 37th running of the Hobart College Lap which was run with an inclusive and fun atmosphere. This year we were very proud to direct our fund-raising efforts to CANTEEN. Sandy, the State Manager of CANTEEN, was greeted with a sea of bandanas in support of their cause as she addressed the crowd and explained how CANTEEN supports young people with Cancer as they struggle with their worlds turned upside down.
After a spirited warm up led by Caleb Kirkpatrick, our runners were off! First place runners were Caleb Nash for the males with a time of 2:27.5 and Beth Dobbie for the females with a time of 2:55.8. Our first staff member was once again Tim McEldowney with a respectable time of 2:37.3.
Special thank you to Rosemary Beswick and Lou Christie for all their work behind the scenes in helping to organise this event and also thank you to Shane Parker and his student leaders, Bob Schlesinger and his Business Studies students, Lou Christie’s IT students and Glenn Freeman’s VET Sport and Recreation students for helping with marshalling, timing and a range of other tasks.
Margaret Mead (OAM) Visit to Health Studies
On Friday 17 September, Margaret Mead (OAM) came to speak to one of our Health Studies 3 classes. She has worked as a nurse with the Leprosy Mission in both Kabul, Afghanistan and in Bukavu, Democratic Republic of Congo. She spoke of her experiences in both countries. This fitted perfectly with our Global Health Unit where we look at issues such as lack of access to clean water and sanitation, poverty and malnutrition. Her knowledge of the circumstances of some of the worlds poorest people, and some of the positive solutions in place, was invaluable. We thank her sincerely for her time.
Southern Tasmanian Badminton Competition
Congratulations to our Badminton Teams who won both the A and B Grade College finals in the Southern Tasmanian Badminton Competition.
College Basketball Competition
Hobart College Division 1 Basketball team went down by 10 points to Elizabeth College at Swisherr Hoops Academy in the College Grand Final on Monday 18 October. The final score was 64-74. All players were a credit to the College. Big thanks to Anthony Stewart for this support this year.
School's Bench Press Championships
Powerlifting Australia ran their annual School Bench Press Championships in September/October which was hugely successful with many records broken and many new athletes participating. This years winning School was defending champion Hobart College with a huge 26 individual competitors. The HPOE department was awarded $500 from Powerlifting Australia. Congratulations to all students involved!
VET Presentation Assembly
On 25 and 26 October, students from the Hobart College VET courses were celebrated in a presentation assembly. Participation certificates were presented to all VET students by their respective VET teacher/co-ordinator. It was a wonderful way to recognise the outcomes achieved and hear success stories from each of the VET programs at Hobart College.
VET Tourism
Tahune Adventures with Noah and Fynn
On Thursday 19 August, Fynn and Noah led the Tourism class on an all day adventure to Tahune Adventures near Geeveston. Whilst there, Noah had organised with his employers, King River Rafting and his boss Paul, to guide us down the Picton River. The class needed extra staff for this adventure so Jo Goldfinch and Cam Lynch jumped in to help out. Noah was the lead guide on the day and provided the safety briefing for the class before departure and then guided the three rafts down the Picton River. What a great adventure for all with the sun out, good water flow, and a class talk with Paul on what skills and attributes are required to be a successful guide in an adventure wilderness activity. Thanks Fynn and Noah for organising and guiding such a fantastic and wild tourism day trip.
Hastings Caves with Molly and Finn
On Thursday 26 August as a part of the "Thursday Tourism Tour", Molly and Finn led the class and set off to Hastings Caves. They had organised a private tour of the caves with National Parks and Wildlife’s guides Alice and Paul. “A fascinating underground world that was a truly unique experience, especially when our guides turned the lights off”, says Sarah.
Next on our tour we headed to Dover for a brief history lesson on the area and the geography. From here our guides led us to Big Roaring Beach to walk along to the Eagles monument on the rocks at the end of the beach. A great way to finish the tour with a bit of fresh air after such a long bus ride. Thanks Molly and Finn!
Zoo Doo/Richmond with Azhure and Madi
On Thursday 16 September the last student led and organised day trip tour to ZooDoo and Richmond was run with our guides Azhure Hodgetts and Madi Fyfe.
The first stop on the tour was ZooDoo where we toured the zoo. We saw the Tasmanian Devils and played with and patted the kangaroos who were just ‘relaxing in the sun’. We joined in a farm tour, a new addition to ZooDoo’s attractions, before patting Graham the 18-month-old wombat and Azhure taking the opportunity to hand feed a lion!
Our next stop was to Oak Lodge where we met Lois the Manager of the three-storey lodge that was built in 1830 and is now a Tasmanian National Trust. Oak Lodge is the only historic home in Richmond which is open to the public. It’s like a time capsule – the interior and exterior have barely changed since the early 1800s.
Azhure and Madi then led us on a tour of Richmond, which of course meant stopping to get a class photo in front of Australia oldest bridge built in 1830! A great tour led in beautiful Spring weather by two professional Tourism students.
East Coast Tour '21
On Wednesday October 27, the VET Certificate in Tourism class celebrated a successful year by heading off on an East Coast Tour guided by teacher Bob.
First, we headed to Saffire Hotel, Tasmania’s leading and award-winning luxury hotel at Coles Bay. There we were met by Jo who guided us through the property showing us 2 of the 20 luxury suites they offer, their restaurant and facilities that all have amazing views across the bay to the Hazard Mountain Range and the Freycinet National Park. After our tour Jo sat us down in the Hotel Boardroom for a ‘chalk and talk’ session explaining what it is like to work in such a quality establishment and explained how the employees all work together to deliver the ‘plus one’ holiday experience each and everyone of their guest receives.
The class then headed to Freycinet National Park to walk into Wine Glass Bay and enjoy a swim. From here the class travelled onto Friendly Beaches, the Blow Hole at Bicheno, and in the evening, a guided Small Penguin Tour.
On Thursday morning, the class woke up to a fresh fruit salad and yoghurt breakfast before heading off on the bus to walk into the Apsley Gorge, where Finn was the only one brave enough to have a ‘fresh water’ swim.
On our return leg we stopped and visited the Devil's Corner Vineyard to enjoy the lookout and quality surroundings they have created there.
Our last stop was in Triabunna for a late seafood lunch and to meet John Samin who has just finished rebuilding the Triabunna Barracks into a very high-quality Bed and Breakfast accommodation in the heart of Triabunna. John led a tour of his soon to be award winning accommodation and talked to the class about his marketing and business thoughts about Tourism and how he believes it is just about to boom again soon. Just in time for the 2021 class to all gain new and exciting jobs in this dynamic industry! A great way to end a fantastic year.
Daniel joins MACq01
Congratulations to Daniel Pendlebury from the VET Certificate II in Tourism class who has secured a three week paid trial at Maq01 as a walking-story-telling-guide. Through the collaboration between Jo Pickering from Saffire and Federal Human Resources Manager, Daniel was granted an interview with Justin Johnston, master story teller at MACq01 and IXL Henry Jones, who offered him the opportunity once College finishes.
Bob Schlesinger said he is "absolutely stoked" for Daniel, "especially knowing how well suited he is to the Tourism/Hospitality Industry". Bob went on to say "this lead actor from our College musical Matilda can now take his thespian skills to work with the domestic and international tourist who visit and stay in these beautiful hotels".
Congratulations Daniel and good luck for the future.
Lawfest - "...to beanie or not to beanie?"
The 21st Annual Lawfest was due to be held at the Stanley Burbury Theatre on the University of Tasmania’s Sandy Bay site on Tuesday 31 August. However, COVID stymied plans, for a second year!
Not to be deterred, the planning group, with the on-going help of the UTAS Law School and the School of Government, arranged for an on-line version of the presentations.
The HoCo Legal Studies classes where able to go on-line to listen to expert presentations about the 6 Topical Legal Issues that will be examined externally (students only have to choose one for the exam).
The topics of the six presentations were:
* Raising the age of criminal responsibility
* Voluntary assisted dying reform
* Political donation law reform in Tasmania
* Treaties with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples
* Net zero by 2050: Australia’s international obligations and legal responses to climate change
* Legal challenges in investigating and prosecuting alleged ADF war crimes in Afghanistan
We were all very grateful to our university colleagues for going to such trouble to help prepare our students for the exam.
BUT WAIT THERE’S MORE!!!
The School of Politics and the Law School also provided special show packs for each student, which included (as you may have observed) beanies, as well as drink bottles, lunch packs and utensils and more.
Albie launches into Game Design
Albie Edgell-Taylor is the technical director of the emerging game SCP:Pandemic which is set to on the PC platform in the near future. The concept of SCP:Pandemic is one in a series of games drawn from an online writing community based on a fictional universe. In August this year, the design team ran a KickStart campaign and raised in excess of $100.000USD . These funds will now employ staff full time to move the project towards the Early Access released on STEAM in late December. Albie in his role as technical director, has been responsible for the oversight of the programming, the virtual reality artwork and general aesthestics of the game. Keep your eye out for SCP:Pandemic!
Interschool Chess Competition
Congratulations to Hobart College students Aikihiro Katsuta, Lachlan Rogers, Nirmit Naik, Oscar Jenner, Sean Wilson, Jayden Forsman and Luke Palmer who competed in the Interschool Chess Competition in September. Competing against nine other schools, the HoCo Chess team finished third overall with Aikihiro named top player with a score of 5 out of a maximum of 7.
News from Technology
YOUNG ARTIST MENTORSHIP SUCCESS
Congratulations to Design and Production Glass student Gemroo Watkins-Iceton who was awarded individual mentorship with glass artist, Craig Snell as a part of the Creative Huon Young Artist Mentorship Program. Gemroo will be provided mentorship and support with career aspirations, development of new skills and techniques and making connections with other artists over a period of three months. Hobart College alumnus Ronan Conley, from the Design and Production Glass class of 2o20, was also successful in gaining a place in the mentorship program. We wish them both every success.
ELECTRIC GO-CART FEATURED ON ABC RADIO
Automotive teacher Nathan Fox and VET Automotive student Harry Cooling were recently interviewed by Lucille Cutting from ABC Radio. They spoke about the development of an electric gocart powered by a Tesla engine as a part of the automotive course. You can listen to the interview below.
OBJECT DESIGN EXHIBITION
Object Design is a Level 3 course that is taught at college in partnership with University of Tasmania mentors who come to college to talk to and work with the Object Design students. This year’s Object Design students worked across the Textiles, Ceramics, Glass, Wood and Metal studios and what an fabulous year it has been for all students involved in this course.
The theme this year was ‘Repair’ and once again teachers were amazed by the creative ideas that flowed from our students. Some students chose to respond to the idea of ‘Repair’ in terms of emotional and spiritual repair, and some on environmental repair, while others focused on mental health repair, post-pandemic repair and community repair. Other responses were centred on notions of reuse and reimagine and some on healing, while others engaged with ideas of transformation. It was so exciting to watch our students’ designs develop and grow throughout the year and the end results were nothing short of fabulous!
Students were also given the opportunity to exhibit their work in the School of Creative Arts and Media Gallery, which was a first for many. Parents, teachers and fellow students enjoyed the opening night where the work of many talented designers was showcased.
When students were asked to use words to describe the Object Design Course, they came up with: challenging, inspiring, creative thinking, teaches you to be independent, diligent, and thought provoking. Another student summed it up by saying: 'Object design ignited the artist within me that I genuinely had no idea existed. It has encouraged me to view life and the things around me from many new, unique perspectives.' (Lottee Mansfield).
FOOD, COOKING AND NUTRITION
The FCN class made some fantastic Halloween inspired gingerbread villages recently and spent a great final lesson demolishing them! What a wonderful way to finish the school year in FCN.
Congratulations Caitlin!
Congratulations to HoCo’s very own Caitlin Richardson on being nominated for the Australian Writers’ Guild’s (AWG) 54th Annual AWGIE Awards for her screen writing on her series The Tailings. The AWGIES celebrate Australian stage and screen writing.
The Tailings has also been nominated in the AACTA (Australian Academy Of Cinema and Television Arts) in the Best Short Form Drama category. The Tailings, set and filmed in Tassie's own Queenstown, can still be viewed online on SBS OnDemand. Caitlin is also an excellent English teacher and we are lucky to have her on staff.
From the AWG website:
"An outstanding field of Australian screen and stage writers have been nominated for the 54th Annual AWGIE Awards in a year that champions storytellers who have crafted works of strength, creativity and ambition. The nominations exemplify the excellence and range of Australian writers, with stories that speak to the complexity and richness of our past, alongside those that seek to understand our present, telling tales of our everyday heroes, our struggles and our joys."
Author Danielle Wood Visit
In the first week of Term Four, award winning writer and Senior Lecturer at UTAS, Danielle Wood, ran a short workshop for English Writing students. We learned about Danielle’s own journey as a writer and her role at UTAS. Students then worked alongside Danielle to create short pieces of writing, that encouraged them to think about writing as a form of craftsmanship and reflect on the power of words.
HoCo Reads!
To acknowledge the value of reading in our lives as Hobart College students and teachers, the Australian Reading Hour was celebrated in the library Fiction area by members of the Book Club. The extra special lunchtime meeting featured read-alouds as well as book discussion accompanied by hot chocolate and comfort food as we sat on the couches surrounding a display of Australian “Stories that matter”. Book Club has met regularly in the library over the course of this year to bond over books.

2022 College Musical Announcement
Hobart College is proud to present the Tasmanian premiere of Cry Baby in May/June 2022!
This Tony nominated musical is a rebellious teen comedy based on the cult classic 1990’s John Waters film Cry Baby starring Johnny Depp. From the writers of Hairspray, the story follows the likes of Wade “Cry Baby” Walker as the coolest boy in Baltimore who’s a bad boy with a good cause – truth, justice and the pursuit of rock and roll. Cry Baby, and rich girl Allison, are star-crossed lovers fuelled by hormones and the new music craze “rock and roll”. Think ‘Romeo and Juliet’ meets ‘High School Hellcats’ filled with unforgettable songs and high energy choreography. It’s going to be a blast!
Visit the links below to see the Sydney Theatre Company’s promo video and hear the songs from the show.
From the Sustainability Learning Centre
The Sustainability Learning Centre (SLC) has had another productive year with the highlights being:
