Newsletter - Issue 1 March 2021
From the Principal
Welcome to the first Newsletter for 2021 and especially to all our new students, parents and carers. We hope you enjoy being part of this vibrant, safe and diverse community of learners. This year we are transitioning to an online newsletter format and we encourage you to stay connected with the college through our Facebook page, Instagram and website, participation in our regular College Association meetings (either attending online by TEAMS or attending face to face) and our Parent Teacher evenings (which are held in terms 1, 2 and 3). Please contact the office on 6220 3133 for more help on accessing any of these platforms.
Once again Hobart College students continued to achieve outstanding academic and vocational results in 2020 and we are currently preparing for our annual Awards Evening where student achievements from last year will be recognised. Our goal at Hobart College is for all students to complete the Tasmanian Certificate of Education (TCE) and for us to prepare them for a successful transition to further studies or employment. We are also committed to providing students with a holistic education that enables them to be healthy, connected, and responsible members of the community and this is our main focus through the Home Group Program on Wednesdays.
Wellbeing and differentiation in learning are our school improvement priorities for 2021 and teachers started the year with professional learning sessions around these key themes. This year we are also focusing on providing more avenues for students to take on leadership roles through service within the college, and for students to have a greater voice in both their learning and how the college operates. Finally, we will continue to work with our associated high schools over this year to ensure there are greater pathway opportunities for all students to continue their education across the southern region and to achieve successful outcomes at the end of Year 12.
I hope to see as many of you as possible at our first Meet the Home Group Teacher Evening on Tuesday 16 March or at our College Association AGM on 23 March and please do not hesitate to contact me on 6220 3133 or email tracy.siedler@education.tas.gov.au if you have any concerns throughout this year.

Clean Up Australia Day 2021
Hobart College staff and students were out and about for Clean Up Australia Day on Wednesday 3 March. LandClean Up College Day has traditionally been based on the HoCo campus, with many unusual items collected destined for landfill. For 2021, the Student Environment Team (SET) wanted to step-up and connect with the College’s neighbours and community. Half of the 400 student volunteers cleaned up around the Mt Nelson roadways and reserves. Thanks to SPECTRAN for providing road signage, Veolia for the landfill skip, and all of our volunteers!

News from the Music Area
It’s an exciting year ahead for the music department as our young performers are working towards excellence. The Music Technology course has had increased interest with a second class being offered, giving more opportunities for students to pursue recording and production techniques to prepare them for many jobs in an evolving industry and further UTAS studies. Music 3 and UTAS Music students have been practising hard for regular performance opportunities, and having the chance to get lessons and mentorship from our fantastic team of Music Tutors and accompanists. The House Band and vocal ensemble is in full swing, building up their entertaining set list for their first concert near the end of the term.

They will also be collaborating with the Media Production class to create film clips and band interviews. There will be a compilation album in Term 3 on their mission to support emerging artists. Olinda Groove Records is a label and is open to High School students and the greater community, if you’d like to book in a free recording session contact lachlan.court@education.tas.gov.au. Come to the Olinda Groove 2021 Launch, and support our talented emerging artists!
Concert Band Summer School
65 performers from 22 schools joined our inaugural Concert Band Summer School program. They worked with guest conductors and instrumental specialists to prepare five pieces over three days. The ensemble included a range of abilities from primary school right through to UTAS Conservatorium.
