Principal's Message

As Term 2 draws to a close, I’m filled with pride and gratitude for the energy, commitment, and community spirit that defines Hobart College. One of the most cherished events on our calendar, Dark HoCo, once again brought us together in the early morning chill to celebrate the end of the semester and the Mid-Year Assessment Period (MYAP). With braziers glowing, warm drinks in hand, and kunanyi/Mt Wellington glowing pink in the morning light, it was a beautiful reminder of the strength of our college community.

This year, we’ve been buoyed by positive recognition of our students’ achievements, particularly in TCE attainment. It’s been encouraging to see the broader community acknowledge the hard work of our students and staff. While we continue to work on improving attendance, our focus remains on supporting every student to be present, engaged, and striving for their personal best. Our values of excellence, courage, and growth guide us in celebrating progress and identifying areas for continued improvement.

A major development this term has been our designation as a Priority 1 school for capital works. We’ve been promised four new modular classrooms, scheduled for installation in Term 3—an exciting and much-needed step forward. I want to extend my sincere thanks to the Hobart College School Association Committee for their tireless advocacy and support in achieving this milestone. While this is a significant win, we continue to advocate for further upgrades to meet the needs of our growing student population and to ensure our Vocational Education and Training (VET) facilities match the excellence of the programs we deliver.

Term 2 is always a whirlwind of activity, and this year was no exception. From Outdoor Education expeditions that embraced the wild Tasmanian winter, to the daily buzz of Breakfast Club, our students and staff have shown incredible resilience and enthusiasm. Visiting our VET programs—from hospitality to automotive to salon services—was a highlight, showcasing the growing skills and confidence of our students.

Our Arts and Performance calendar was equally inspiring. The Music and Performance Showcase evenings were a testament to the talent and dedication of our students, even as they prepare for our upcoming musical, The Wizard of Oz, set to debut in August. Informal events like the HoCo Talent Quest and lunchtime performances continue to be a highlight, with students supporting one another in a way that makes me incredibly proud.

We also welcomed future students during our Taster Day and Futures Expo—both bigger and more engaging than ever. This year’s Futures Expo was especially exciting as we hosted Grade 10 students from Hartz high schools, helping them explore the many pathways available across Hartz 11/12 providers and beyond. These events are crucial in helping students and families make informed decisions about their future. I encourage all families to keep these conversations going at home. Whether your young person is in Year 11 or 12, there’s still plenty of time to achieve great things this year and plan for what comes next.

A key academic focus this term was the Mid-Year Assessment Period (MYAP). Students across all year levels engaged in exams, major assessments, and practical demonstrations of learning. It was a time of focus and determination, and I was impressed by the maturity and effort shown by so many. MYAP also provided a valuable opportunity for staff to gather data, reflect on progress, and tailor support for the second half of the year.

Another important moment was our Parent Teacher Evening, which included both in-person meetings and phone conversations. These interactions are vital in strengthening the partnership between home and school. I want to thank all families who took the time to connect with teachers and discuss their young person’s learning journey. Your engagement makes a real difference.

Among the many other highlights were the Alliance Française competition, Reconciliation Week, Pride Month celebrations, and Men’s Health Week. A standout moment was the Generations in Jazz and House Band trip to Mt Gambier, which was truly outstanding. Our students delivered exceptional performances, both as groups and individuals, and represented the college with professionalism and passion.

This term also saw the launch of our Inaugural Enrichment Clubs—a new initiative designed to help students connect through shared interests and activities. These clubs have already begun to foster new friendships, build confidence, and create a stronger sense of belonging across the college. From chess to creative writing, sustainability to coding, the enthusiasm from both students and staff has been inspiring.

Throughout the term, we’ve had the pleasure of congratulating many students on their individual achievements, which have ranged from international cycling competitions to outstanding results in Chinese Proficiency assessments. These successes reflect the incredible diversity of talent and ambition within our student body, and we are incredibly proud of their efforts.

As we head into the break, I want to thank our entire community—students, families, and staff—for your continued support and commitment. Many of our teachers will be using this time to mark assessments, provide feedback, rehearse with students onsite, and prepare for Term 3. Their dedication is extraordinary, and I am constantly inspired by their passion for teaching and learning.

To those taking a well-earned rest, I wish you a safe and refreshing holiday. And to those working through the break—thank you for keeping the wheels turning.

Warm regards,

Dr Libby Robinson
Principal

Symmons Plains Success

Congratulations to student Lucas Wilson-Royale, who placed 4th in the U20 Open Men's Cross-Country State all schools Competition at Symmons Plains, with a time of 24.06.

National Success for Liam Ludlow

Liam recently competed in the 18th Chinese-Bridge Chinese Proficiency Competition national final, held in Melbourne on 31 May. He first won the statewide competition on 6 May and then went on to represent Tasmanian Chinese language students in the Secondary Education category at the national level.

At the final, Liam competed against 13 other top students from across Australia — each of whom placed in the top three in their respective states. The competition included three rounds: a written test, a Chinese speech, and a cultural performance. After all rounds, Liam was awarded equal third place, alongside two other contestants — a fantastic result!

HoCo Staff Leading the Way

A big HoCo congratulations to five of our incredible teachers who were recognised at the 2025 Australian Council for Educational Leaders (ACEL) Tasmanian Branch Awards on Friday 27 June for their outstanding contributions to educational leadership!
Early Career Teacher Leadership Award winners: Lauren Angus and Raymond Mouchet

Teacher Leadership Award winners: Yvette Jones, Anna Smee and Maddy Walker

We’re incredibly proud of our staff and the depth of leadership they bring to our college every day. Congratulations to you all!

Chess success!

Our Hobart College Chess team performed brilliantly at the Interschool Chess Tournament held on the last day of school at Hutchins School. They achieved a well-deserved 3rd place on countback, finishing overall second—just one point shy of winning. Riley and Dan were awarded joint individual first prize alongside four others in a very strong competition.

Team members were: Quincy Green Carlos, Riely Bowden, Kaplan Prichard, Tran Chi Dan, Romel Perera

HoCo Now Art Exhibition

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us for the opening of our HoCo Now exhibition at the Salamanca Arts Centre! The evening was a celebration of creativity, talent, and the incredible work of our Visual Art and Art Studio Practice students.

Special thanks to Dr Svenja Kratz for her inspiring opening address - and of course, to our students for producing such thoughtful, bold, and beautiful work.

Vet Cookery and Hospitality

In VET Cookery and Hospitality students learn that everyone we look after is important.  Even so, there’s no customer you want to impress more than your parents.

In order to show our gratitude for the supportive parents of our young chefs and front of house staff, the Hospitality class converted our drab classroom into a beautiful, atmospheric restaurant for a one-of-a-kind lunch service.  In an environment where so much can go wrong, both classes exceeded expectations with beautiful food and masterful hospitality.  I’m not sure who was more proud - us or the parents.

Winter Feast

It’s that time of year when people for all over the world descend on Hobart for the Annual Dark MOFO Winter Feast; a highlight of the Hospitality calendar that VET Cookery and Hospitality were not going to miss out on.  Using their skills to turn a bland classroom into a red lit, fully soundtracked MOFO exhibit, complete with full banquet, desserts, themed cocktails and an industrial amount of washing up, these two classes showed that even though they’re only halfway through the course, they can already transform a Thursday lunchtime into something brilliant.

Careers in Construction

In Homegroup, presenters from Hazell Brothers, Stornoway, Qualtech and the Civil Construction Federation spoke to students interested in careers in the construction industry. They spoke about the wide range of roles available, including mechanical and structural engineers, building, metal and automotive trades, accounting and business management. It was a fantastic opportunity for the students to understand the range of careers available to them if they select this pathway.

The students had hands on experience in using the simulators to drive a front-end loader and an excavator to dig holes and load trucks!

Learning Area News: Performing Arts

The Wizard of Oz

Tickets are now on sale for the 2025 Hobart College musical The Wizard of Oz! Our students have been working hard to prepare a dazzling show, bringing the much-loved story to life on stage. We are very proud to present the cast for The Wizard of Oz!

Tickets can be purchased at the link below.

The Wizard of Oz - Tickets!

Performing Arts Trip - Melbourne

This year’s Performing Arts Trip saw students soak up the Melbourne performance scene, offering insights into future pathways, and inspiration in the form of musicals. Students explored the massive Melbourne Careers Expo, discussing future pathways with universities and industry representatives. A tour of the Victorian College of the Arts offered further insight into what it’s like on the Melbourne drama scene, and explanation of the complex world called University.

And it didn’t stop there! Students enjoyed the power ballads of Jesus Christ Superstar, the adventure of The Lord of the Rings Musical, and the fun of being a live studio audience for The Project. HoCo celebrity Lachie Court even made an appearance on TV! The trip wrapped up with a visit to Luna Park, and an Urban Quest – a fast paced team challenge that had them racing around Melbourne.

The Performing Arts Trip offers students a peek into a performance-based future. We’re sure we will see some HoCo talent on a Melbourne stage in no time!

Generations in Jazz - Mt Gambier

At the start of the term, the House Band Stage Band went to Mount Gambier in South Australia, where they performed in the Generations in Jazz festival. As the biggest jazz festival in the country, our students proudly represented Hobart College and performed extremely well. Our students gained high scores from the adjudicators, with our Small Jazz Combo placing third.

The highlight of the festival was meeting the world-class Gordon Goodwin and his "Big Phat Band," and seeing them perform in front of 4,500 students.

Congratulations to our students who worked hard to perform at this festival!

Theatre Performance and Drama 3 Shows

Our Theatre Performance & Drama 3 shows came to a close last week performing to packed houses for their public shows. From powerful performances to unforgettable moments on stage, the casts brought heart, humour, and raw talent to every scene.

The Theatre Performance class presented "Three" by Harriet Braun, an engaging and hilarious show about six teens grappling with love, longing, and identity. What made it unique? Each character was shadowed by their 'inner voice' who revealed their trye thoughts, often contradicting what was said out loud, which lead to a number of laugh-out-loud moments.

Theatre Performance: "Three"

Drama 3 presented "Remote" by Stef Smith, a powerful, poetic piece about finding your voice in a noisy world. We followed Antler as she climbs the tallest tree in the part, trying to isolate herself from the world while below her, groups of teenagers navigate their own struggles, secrets, and choices, intertwining with Antler and each other.

Drama 3: "Remote"

Congratulations to the cast, crew, and staff involved in "Three" and "Remote".

Ensembles Night

With this year's House Band Home Group bursting at the seams, we have divided the students into separate ensembles, allowing students to learn and develop their skills in smaller groups. To celebrate this new format of House Band, we held our first House Band Ensembles Concert. This showcase was a great success. The night began with our special guests, the Kingston High Stage Band, who performed magnificently to the audience.

We also saw our newly formed strings ensemble, accompanied by teachers Cass Olive and Jan Seiler, take the spotlight, performing a medley of songs from The Greatest Showman. We also heard from our Vocal Ensemble, Woodwind Ensemble, Show Band, and Stage Band. The entire House Band, comprising over 70 students, closed the show with some much-loved ABBA favourites.

Congratulations to all staff and students involved!

French Classes "Break the Fast" à la Française!

There is no better way to fend off the winter blues than a delicious French breakfast and that is exactly what the French 2 and 3 classes did mid-term! The students enjoyed croissants with assorted jams, pains au chocolat and yummy hot chocolates while learning about the origins of the foods, their place in the French day and the difference between viennoiseries and pâtisseries. Miam! Miam!

Saying Goodbye to Mao

Mao Sensei assisted the Japanese 2 and 3 classes every Wednesday during Term 2. Every two years, the Australia-Japan Foundation, based in Sydney, provides schools across Tasmania with an Assistant Japanese Teacher. Mao Sensei joined our classes this year, and this term marks the end of his time with us. HoCo Japanese students greatly benefited from his enthusiasm, patience, and knowledge. He will be missed!

Sayonara, Mao Sensei!

Italian Breakfast

When you think of Italy, you think of beautiful language, music... and food! To kick off term 2, the Italian classes were treated to pane al cioccolato (chocolate pastry) and cornetti (croissants). This term, Italian 2 students learned how to talk about their school subjects, including their favourite ones, and how to make comparisons. Meanwhile, the Italian 3 class prepared for their first major Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking assessments in the Mid-Year Exams.

Tiramasu!

To celebrate the end of exams, the Italian 2 class made Tiramasu, which literally translates to pull me up! Students enjoyed making (and eating) this quintessential Italian dessert. Buon appetito!

English Literature Shakespeare

English Literature 3 classes have been diving into Shakespeare this term, brainstorming themes and participating in performative tasks to really immerse themselves in the context dialogue. Ellen's class tried on some dramatic flair to bring The Tempest to life.

Hobart College Debating

Hobart College debated against the Friends School in the semi-finals. Their topic was that the European Union should provide unlimited support to Ukraine. It was an extremely close debate, unfortunately Hobart College lost by four and a half points. Our Hobart College team had an amazing competition, with the Friends School being the only team to beat them throughout the season.

Congratulations to HoCo Debater Lily Obod, who was awarded the Adam Marshall medal for Debating.

Author Visit - Will Kostakis

Our English classes had the pleasure of hearing from acclaimed author Will Kostakis, who delivered an inspiring and insightful talk about his journey as a Young Adult Fiction writer. He shared valuable tips with our English students on crafting compelling short stories, offering practical advice on structure, character development, and narrative hooks. A big thank you to Will for motivating the next generation of storytellers!

Students attending Youth ANZAAS

Youth ANZAAS is an annual residential international forum run by ANZAAS (Australia and New Zealand Association for the Advancement of Science) for science students in Years 10 to 12. Every year, students from each State and Territory are selected to participate in science activities and experiences over a period of a week. This year, three Hobart College students – Tom Coward, Ellen Wei and Rui Ong have been selected to attend. We thank ANZAAS and the Royal Society of Tasmania for their financial support of these students and look forward to hearing of their experience when they return to college next term.

L-R Tom Howard, Ellen Wei, and Rui Ong. These students have been selected to attend Youth ANZAAS

Marine Biology Activities

Recently, the Marine Biology classes have been investigating the body structure of animals that live in water. In the last week of term, the classes were given some trout by Inland Fisheries and were very interested to discover what was inside by doing some detailed dissection. They found that there were both male and female fish and that the females had a rather good stock of caviar (see picture). The Marine Biology course is new to Hobart College this year and students are enjoying learning about biology from the viewpoint of the marine environment.

Home Group

Beacon Speed Careers in Early Childhood and Care

During Home Group, students were given the opportunity to hear from and network with a range of early childhood education professionals at the Beacon Speed Careers in Early Childhood session. Beacon facilitated the event, bringing in staff from Adventure Patch and Gowrie Early Learning. The representatives spoke of the many diverse opportunities in early childhood and how students can be supported to access traineeships and work opportunities. This was an amazing experience for our students to ask questions directly to industry professionals and explore options that connect with their future pathway plans.

Enrichment Clubs

We kicked off new enrichment clubs during home group, offering students a chance to try something different, stretch their brains, or just do something they love. From retro gaming to creative writing, there’s something for everyone. This was the first of three sessions, which will be continuing throughout the rest of the year.

Enrichment: DJing for Girls

HoCo's Ruth Degrassi lead an enrichment activity teaching girls the tricks of DJing! See some photos below of HoCo students on the decks!

HoCo Talent Quest Lights Up the Stage

With over 600 in the audience, our talented performers (students and staff) brought the house down. From headbanging metal bands to soulful ballads, acapella harmonies to poetic prose - and yes, even some impressive whistling - there was no shortage of talent on display.

A massive THANK YOU to everyone who took the stage, the amazing crew behind the scenes who made it all happen, and our judges, who had the most difficult job of all - deciding who won!
