Community Noticeboard
From the Principal
Term 3 holidays are here already. The last few weeks have flown as students have been productive, achieving in sporting events and other broader college community areas.
The talent of HoCo students was showcased and on display with our inaugural Performing Arts Showcases and concerts. Audiences were delighted with the diversity and undeniable talent on display. Students also excelled at the Tasmanian Rock Challenge in Launceston with four HoCo acts into the state final. Visual Arts students have also been preparing for their final exhibitions with the Object Design Assessment Exhibition work being opened at the UTAS School of Art on September 27. Theatre Performance and Technical Production students are doing their final rehearsals for the performance of Tiger Country which will be performed in the first week of term 4. Other subjects continue to focus and support students to finalise folios, tutorials, complete end of unit tests and assignments, and complete the requirements for the VET certificate programs.
We finished the term with a lunch time spring market on the Red Square to celebrate students learning entrepreneurial skills in the $20 Boss Program, Red Square music entertainment and regular Thursday wellbeing QA sessions. Our annual College Lap this year supported the Leukemia foundation, with the student body and staff demonstrating all fitness abilities as they ran, walked, skipped, wheeled, jogged, laughed, and enjoyed a spring moment traversing around the 900m Ring Road track.
Congratulations to all the students who have excelled in so many different areas over this term and who have made the most of the many opportunities to participate in college and extracurricular activities.
Looking forward to Term 4, our Mental Health and Wellbeing Expo in the first Home Group back is a significant event. In addition, the short Term 4 will have its focus on final assessments and transitioning to 2024. As students prepare for external assessments, and final weeks of 2023, we encourage our students to remember to make the most of the supports available in tutorials and specialist individual help from our Student Support and Wellbeing team and embrace the learning and final opportunities on offer to succeed.
Enjoy the holidays and the opportunity to rest and recharge, and see you all back in Term 4.
Regards
Tricia Rowley

Tasmanian College Basketball Championship
The HoCo Men's basketball team had a great Tasmanian College Basketball Championship tournament, culminating in meeting MacKillop College in the grand final. While they didn’t win the GF, they certainly did us proud winning all their games leading up the big one and were excellent ambassadors for the college. Well done team.

Ski & Snowboarding Trip - Sunday 27 August until Friday to September 1
Some thoughts from the participants:
Asher Derma – Year 12 student
"The ski trip was an amazing opportunity, made even better by the great group of people all sharing in the experience. It gave us spectacular mountain views, a chance to build new skills, and countless falls down the snow. The chance to be on proper snow and dedicate days to having fun at Falls Creek was awesome, and always followed with the best food and games afterwards at the lodge. No regrets at all."
Tama Wratten – Year 11 student
"The 2023 Ski trip was an extremely fun experience. I met many new friends and tried to make the most of my time in the snow. Never before had I snowboarded and by the last day, I had really gotten the hang of it! Everyone who was catering for us was really very nice and the food at Ripparoo was tasty. The only thing that was less enjoyable was walking uphill to the resort ski lift in all our gear!"
Finlay Grant - Year 12 student
"Here's a list of the highlights of the ski trip:
- Skiing in the mist
- Bob and Raoul racing
- Falling over on the moguls
- Getting lost when we skied onto grass
- Cards against humanity and poker but no gambling
- Some watched Too Hot to Handle
- Endless pool playing
- Dressing people up for the competition
- And then of course, the people who came made the trip".
John Dalco - Teacher
"A lucky 48 students, 5 teachers and a paramedic (former HoCo student Sari Borojevic) stayed at the very comfortable Ripparoo Lodge in Falls Creek Ski Village, Victoria. Each morning it was a short walk to the chairlift to take us up to the snow. Even with only average snow conditions we could ski almost back to the lodge each evening. We had 3 great bluebird days and only one in the mist and sleet. The HoCo crowd went out every day (and all day) and really improved their skills. Hearty hot breakfasts, lunches and dinners were the go every day. Evenings were spent doing hours of Physics, Maths Specialised, Sociology and English Literature study, just to name a few. There was also ample time for recreational games, playing cards, pool or quietly reading."

Cert II Community Services (Early Childhood) – SLC
Students studying the Certificate II Community Services (Early Childhood) spent some time at the Sustainability Centre. A prep classroom of children came to the centre to do some Bush Kinder activities organised by the students. The play and learn activities included water play, fort construction, leaf art, and nature weaving. How lucky are we to have access to such a wonderful environment and facility on our doorstep to do our learning!
VET Tourism – Student Led tours

They have covered all of the tourist hot spots including the Huon, Tasman Peninsula, Tahune Airwalk, Geeveston, Bruny Island, Port Arthur and the Tasman Peninsula. It has been a fantastic learning experience for the students as it provides “real-world” outcomes and critical thinking skills, just as you would expect in industry.

VET Health Services – Divergent Therapy program
The VET Health Services students took part in Hobart Colleges Diversional Therapy program recently as they assisted clients from Uniting Agewell with card making. Students were able to put their theory into practice and demonstrated a high standard of care. By the looks of the smiling faces it was a great session for everyone involved.
Be like Gabe
Gabe has changed so much over the year with being so keen of late to do well and improve their grades. They are usually very relaxed (as you can see in the photo) and have a great sense of humour. Earlier in the year they were always disinterested and ‘hated maths’, but they seem to love it now.
Gabe’s Maths teacher, Umesh Pratap, noticed a most remarkable change in attitude to their approach in completing the assigned tasks, as the year has progressed. Whilst Gabe did not show much enthusiasm earlier in the year, they have been working with a lot of passion in the latter part, striving to achieve their best possible results by promptly attending all classes, listening intently and asking for help.
Gabe was asked to say what actually brought the change:
Their answers were:
- "Deliberately changing some life habits that helped me concentrate on my work more.
- Encouraged by my teacher. His sense of humour is amazing, and he always takes a friendly and supportive approach when dealing with students. Umesh makes the class work engaging by lots of related stories (and laughs) and providing real life applications of the concepts. He is so approachable and helpful".
Learning Area News - Performing Arts
Folk Festival
The HoCo music department played host to Erin from the Cygnet folk festival as part of our HoCo Folk Showcase. Erin spoke about the festival and made connections with our emerging performers to support them with performance opportunities in the future. The Red Square was bustling with folk sounds from our talented performers - congratulations to all who performed!
Rock Challenge
Congratulations to the super talented Isabella Davis (acoustic), Glass Media, The Unknown and MP who all performed spectacularly at the State Final of the Tasmanian Rock Challenge in Launceston.
MP and The Unknown were given honourable mentions at the end of the night and congratulations to Fergus (lead singer from The Unknown) from Taroona High for winning the high school acoustic category.
All acts were incredibly professional, creative and engaging to watch and they have a bright music career ahead of them - the calibre of all the acts in the final was outstanding and things are looking positive for Tasmania's next generation of musicians.
Performance Showcases
Over the course of two weeks, students from the Performing Arts were busy showcasing their work at 4 showcases including Olinda Groove, Music Showcase, Vocal Showcase and Performing Arts Showcase. Students prepared pieces to share with friends and family in the Mount Nelson Theatre, in preparation for the final assessments in early Term 4. There was amazing talent on show and highlighted the teaching and learning that has taken place over the course of this year. Music students also collaborated with Kingston High School who combined to form a concert band to open the Music Showcase.
VET Screen and Media excursion
Students from the VET Screen and Media class enjoyed visiting the UTAS Media School recently, where they were treated to a tour of facilities and discussion on pathways within the media communications area.
Shout out to Bliss Sandhu and HoCo Alumnus Andy Terhell for showing us around and for sharing your wealth of knowledge!
Olinda Groove compilation album release
Olinda Groove launched their 2023 compilation album at the Olinda Groove concert. The album has now been released to many streaming services including spotify – just search for Olinda Groove 2023. Kingston High and Hobart College Combined Concert Band
HoCo music students combined with Kingston High School Tasmania to rehearse as a "super-concert-band". The group opened the Music Showcase concert in the Mount Nelson Theatre, and they were sounding amazing.
Hot August Jazz Festival
It was a full house at the Uniting Church when the HoCo House Band performed as part of the Hot August Jazz Festival. They wowed the audience with their eclectic set of instrumental and vocal numbers featuring many talented soloists throughout.
A highlight was the performance of the piece ‘Top Adjacent’ by Gordon Goodwin. This piece featured as part of the repertoire at the Generations in Jazz national band championships earlier this year which help secure first place for the band.
The good music flowed on to Room for a Pony where the Extension Band featured a number of soloists from the incredible UTAS Music class. The set was capped off by an extremely sophisticated original from the group ‘Hands off the Sun’ who had been backing all the other soloists throughout.
Congratulations to all our young performers on the outstanding performances!

The Theatre Performance class are currently preparing for their final performance of 2024. The upcoming performance of 'Tiger Country' will run from 19 – 21 October @7pm in the Mount Nelson Theatre.
Use this link to secure your seats: www.trybooking.com/CKIPU or scan the QR code in the graphic.
“Nina Raine's Tiger Country is a hospital play that follows a tangle of doctors and nurses in a busy hospital.
Professionalism and prejudice, turbulent staff romances, ambition and failure collide in this swirling, action-packed drama about an overburdened health service that we all depend on and the dedicated individuals that keep it going.
'Tiger Country' is where animal instinct stirs and an irrefutable eye opens. Where we make eye contact with the unknown.”
'Do you know what it’s like to be the person who’s actually sticking the knife in here? Or here? You stick a knife in close to an artery, boy do you know it. Then you’re in tiger country.'
