From the Principal
It has been an unusually short Term 4 with a major focus on preparing for final assessments in all subjects. We started the term with the Mental Health and Wellbeing Expo and this was followed by the Drama, Theatre Performance, and Music students all undertaking their practical exams. Art students worked hard to complete displays for the Art Exhibition and language students had their oral exams. There have been several celebrations including the International Students’ Celebration Dinner, Learning Support market, International World Teacher Day lunch, and the final VET, Home Group, and Learning Support assemblies during the last week of formal classes. We hope all our students feel proud of what they have achieved this year.
This is my final Newsletter as I am going on Long Service Leave before retiring in early 2023. I would like to thank the whole college community for the support and collegiality that I have received in my principalship over the last 13 years at Hobart College. It has been a privilege to be the Principal of such a high-performing school and I acknowledge the exemplary staff for the work they do every day to ensure that all students have a positive learning experience. I would also like to thank the Hobart College Association and Old Hobartian’s Association for their ongoing support and commitment to the college.
Wendy Irvine will be Acting Principal for the next few weeks while the selection process for Principal is finalised. I know that you will continue to support Wendy in her role and warmly welcome the new Principal for 2023.
I wish our Year 12 Leavers all the best for the future and hope that they have many happy memories from their time at college. Happy and safe holidays to the Year 11 students and course confirmations and other important information for 2023 will be emailed out in early December.
Regards

Emma Morton and Brodie Nicholson – HORSE RIDING CHAMPIONSHIPS
Congratulations to Emma and Brodie who participated in the Marcus Oldham Australian Interschool Championships for horse riding. Brodie was second after the dressage and then dropped to finish 13th after completing the show jumping and cross country. In the following dressage tests, Brodie rode well and got a 5th and 8th place. Unfortunately, Emma's horse developed cellulitis and had to be scratched after a promising start.

Congratulations to Grace, and Hannah who received Participation Certificates, and Kirra who was 1st Runner-Up in the 2022 Young Tasmanian Writers Prize.

Jess and Ada performed in the team dance, and Jess performed in the team as well as solo events. She placed 20th, which was an incredible achievement.

Congratulations on your performances!
Congratulations to the two teams representing Hobart College at the Tassie Solar Car Challenge recently - "CARmichael" and "The Big Vroom". The strong sunlight in the morning meant that these electronics students had to work on the spot to engineer solutions so that the cars would stay on the rails around tight corners. They succeeded, reaching the quarterfinals in the afternoon, where the fading light became more advantageous to the fierce competition. Thanks to all involved.
Alex Hanigan
Congratulations to Alex who won the U/18 boys 1,500m race at the Tasmanian All Schools Athletics Championships.

Staff Achievements
As a part of World Teachers’ Day, HoCo celebrated with a special lunch with guest student speakers who acknowledged the important role teachers play in shaping the futures of young people. There was also the acknowledgment of four staff who reached their 25 and 40 years of service with the Education Department. Congratulations to Hobart College staff members, Rod Collins (40 Years of Service), Trish Rowley (25 Years of Service), Sue Le Messurier (25 Years of Service) and, Neesha-Marie Hartog (25 Years of Service). A total of 115 years of contribution with these 4 staff alone!
2022 Red Cross Hobart College Lap
On the last Wednesday of Term 3, we saw the 38th running of the Hobart College Lap. This year we were very proud to direct our fund-raising efforts to Red Cross for their "Be a Mate" program. The MATES program is a unique Tasmanian Red Cross program that aims to reduce loneliness in our community by forming friendships and linking participants to fun and fulfilling community activities. Volunteers and participants in MATES are matched based on similar interests and values and form a friendship that both find really rewarding.
After a spirited warm-up led by Caleb Kirkpatrick, our runners were off! First-place runners were Alex Hanigan for the males with a time of 2:20.35 and Narryna Nicholas for the females with a time of 3.10.00. Our first staff member was Callum Dungey with a very respectable time of 2:35.
Special thank you to Rosemary Beswick for all her work behind the scenes in helping to organise this event and also thank you to Shane Parker and his student leaders, Bob Schlesinger and his Business Studies students, Lou Christie’s IT students, and Glenn Freeman’s VET Sport and Recreation students for helping with marshaling, timing and a range of other tasks.
HoCo 2022 Health Expo
What a cracker of a day! The school community joined together to engage with an array of mental health and well-being services. We all enjoyed the beautiful warm sun, the funky band, and the range of different food options. It was a great way to start Term 4.
Cultural Food Celebration
On Monday, 25 October, to kick off the Language Department's Cultural Food Celebrations, the Italian Foundation Class made ‘pasta fatta a mano’ (handmade pasta). We made fettucine with sugo di pomodoro (tomato sauce). A messy but thoroughly fun time was had by all with plates of delicious fresh pasta at the end. ‘Buon Appetito!
ISP Dinner
On Wednesday October 19, HoCo held its annual International Student Dinner at the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania. We heard moving speeches from Principal Tracy and ISP Coordinator Christena as well as Maya Kaltenborn who is the 2022 Valedictorian and Huong Minh Vo. We finished the evening with some musical performances from some of our ISP students. It was a wonderful way to celebrate the year as a group.
LGBTIQ group end of year celebration
The Hobart College LGBTIQ group enjoyed their end-of-school lunch in the last week of Term 4 where the celebrated the year and said a sad goodbye to the year 12s.
VET Presentation Assembly
On 26 and 27 October, students from the Hobart College VET courses were celebrated in a presentation assembly. Students heard from guest speakers from Work & Training and Mas National who shared about how to prepare for the next stage after College in terms of being work ready and landing a job.
Participation certificates were presented to all VET students by their respective VET teacher/co-ordinator. It was a wonderful way to recognise the outcomes achieved and hear success stories from each of the VET programs at Hobart College. Well done to everyone involved!
Music News
Music Exams
Congratulations to all UTAS Music students on their performance recitals recently. Audiences were treated to an array of great music from rock, funk, jazz, classical, soul, musical theatre, metal, and much much more. There was much work put in behind the scenes as students had to present 15-20minutes of music and many were managing accompanists and bands to bring their arrangements to life. All students performed to their potential and it was evident that this cohort were also very supportive of one another, many playing in each other's exams or just providing friendly support behind the scenes. We are so proud of all who performed, and many of this group will go on to pursue music as a career. The Tasmanian music scene has a bright future ahead with these extremely talented and hard-working musicians.
Hobart College House Band Tour
The Hobart College House Band is about to embark on its end-of-year tour to multiple schools, finishing off with a public event on Friday 25 November at the Channel Court Shopping Centre between 12 and 1pm, and the Salty Dog between 5pm-8pm. This extremely talented group has had a great year bringing to life some very entertaining and challenging repertoire. Everyone is welcome to come and celebrate the year with the band at either of the public performances (or both!). The Salty Dog show will include the extension band for the first 2 sets and the full house band for the last set at 7pm.
Here is a taster of the House Band in action:
Olinda Groove September Concert videos are now available!
Follow this link for some great performances from our emerging musicians:
Olinda Groove @ the Salty Dog
On Friday November 4, HoCo Contemporary Music students performed at a gig at the Salty Dog in Kingston and it featured a range of acoutic acts and bands from the Olida Groove record label. Some of the acts are now "industry ready" and will be picking up gigs around Hobart so keep an eye out!
Watch this short video which contains snippet from each of the acts:
Design and Production - Textiles
Australia is one of the largest consumers of textiles globally. Did you know that the average Australian purchases 27kg of clothing each year and 23kg of this ends up in landfill? In their final unit, Design and Production Textiles students have been having a lot of fun upcycling, repurposing, reimagining, reusing, and repairing unwanted textiles items. Upcycling gives students an opportunity to unleash their creativity… underwear into a top, a top into a skirt, lengthened jeans, embellished denim, appliqued shirts, modified skirts, denim into hats, jeans into corsets, repaired vests, and mended pants all help reduce textiles waste and embrace a shift towards a circular economy.
Debating News
‘It was the best of times, it was the worst of times’ in Debating this year. We fielded three great teams in the TDU’s College Competition and found ourselves first, fourth and fifth on the ladder of eight teams at the end of the season. With Covid and venue problems the competition stretched out until November 2 and the decision was made by HC 1 to forfeit their semi-final in favour of HC2 as retests and assignments needed to take priority. HC2 went through the season undefeated and dominant in all debates, only to be pipped by EC1 in the final by one point in a very interesting debate on the topic “That we should ban research into Artificial Intelligence”. Seasoned debaters mentored newcomers and the club worked in a spirit of cheerful cooperation. As Mackenna would say: “Did you have fun?” and, in spite of all the problems, we would probably all say, “Yes, we did.”
VET Tourism final trip
On Thursday, November 3, the Tourism class met Bob with the bus at 7.50am to depart to the Tasman Peninsula to join Pennicott’s Wilderness Journey on their Tasman Island Cruise.
We met their ‘little yellow boat’, with three 300 horsepower outboard engines at the Pirates Bay Wharf. Our group of 17 students and 2 teachers arrived first to meet the skipper for the day, Cain, and eagerly grabbed the front seats to maximise the high-speed thrills on the water and around the cliffs of the Tasman Peninsula. Twenty tourists arrived to take part in the cruise, luckily bringing good whole-body hooded ponchos for us to wear for the trip ahead into a 4-metre southerly swell.
Cain ably skippered this fast boat getting us up and close to Tasman Arch, a fast-flowing waterfall at Waterfall Bay, many seal colonies, the candle stick at Cape Hauy, the landing at Tasman Island, and the Blade at Cape Pillar, before heading off into the Southern Ocean in search of whales charging over 8 metre waves and drown all who sat in the front seats!
What a fantastic way to celebrate a great year in the VET Tourism class in 2022. Thanks to Pennicott Wilderness Journey’s & ‘Leaky Sue’, our student teacher who accompanied us.
