NOTICEBOARD
From the Principal
It has been another fun and productive few weeks leading into the Term 3 holidays with students achieving in so many different areas both at College and in the broader community.
The Musical Showcase concerts by the Performing Arts Music students were outstanding and really did shine a light on the varied talents of our students. That week ended with our students also excelling at the Tasmanian Rock Challenge in Launceston with three HoCo acts taking out top spots in the College Band and Acoustic categories. Visual Arts students have also been preparing for their final exhibitions with the Object Design Assessment Exhibition work being opened at the UTAS School of Art on Thursday 29 September; and the Theatre Performance and Technical Production students doing their final rehearsals for performances in the first week of term 4. Other subjects are focusing on finalising folios, end-of-unit tests, and completing the requirements for Certificate programs. We finished the term with students learning entrepreneurial skills in the $20 Boss Program and our annual College Lap.
Congratulations to all the students who have excelled in so many different areas over this term and have made the most of the many opportunities to participate in college and extracurricular activities.
We are looking forward to the Mental Health and Wellbeing Expo in the first Home Group of Term 4 to set everyone up for the short Term 4 with its focus on final assessments and transitioning to 2023. As students prepare for external assessments, remember to make the most of the support available in tutorials and specialist individual help from our Student Support and Wellbeing team. A shout out to Jenni and Denika, our dedicated and caring School Psychologists, as the Department celebrated 100 years of School Psychologists in schools last week.
Enjoy the holidays and the opportunity to rest and recharge and see you all back in Term 4.
Regards

Tasmanian Training Awards – Winners Announced
On September 9, our six HoCo finalists attended the annual Tasmanian Training Awards ceremony at Wrest Point. Congratulations to Freya Milic and Isabelle King who won their respective categories. A wonderful achievement. We are very proud of all of our nominees and winners.
Listen to an interview with Pheobe Johnston below:
International Student of the Year Award
Congratulations to Ryunhyung (Lucy) Lee on winning the prestigious Study Tasmania International Student of the Year Award. Lucy was chosen from a competitive field from all schools across Tasmania. She won the award due to her involvement in the Hobart College school community as a Student Leader, her role in the wider community as an International Student Ambassador, welcoming and supporting new international students into Tasmania, and her excellent academic results. We are super proud of her attitude, efforts, and achievements.
Noosa Chances - Scholarship Recipient
Congratulations to Ella Kelly who recently won a Noosa Chances/Altitude Scholarship to support her pathway onto university study. Thanks to the generosity of the Bennelong Foundation, the scholarship is an annual payment for the remainder of Ella's time at College and throughout her tertiary education.
New York One Shot Photo Contest Success
Congratulations to HoCo Visual Art student, Leila Middleton, who received Bronze and an Honourable Mention in the 2022 One Shot Photo Contest in New York. Leila was chosen amongst entrants from over 68 countries around the world. The One Shot press release noted:
"Leila Middleton emerged as one of the most exceptional and has received the following honours: Bronze: Film & Alternative Process (Jasper's room) and Honorable Mention: Abstract (LED). The One Shot Photo Contest is dedicated to recognizing the power of the single photographic image. Winners and honourees must exemplify talent and creativity that stretches the limits of photography while expanding the viewer’s worldview, exploring the unexpected, and reframing subjects in new ways."
Congratulations Leila. Truly a remarkable achievement!
Charlotte Ditcham takes flight
HoCo student Charlotte Ditcham headed to Canberra on September 8 in a Tiger Moth plane, just like the one that carried her great-great-aunt, Brenda Hean, an environmental activist who disappeared without a trace on September 8, 1972. Charlotte and her family aimed to fulfill the journey Brenda didn't complete with the message ‘Restore Lake Pedder’ written in the Canberra sky.
“Brenda was prepared to do something about what she thought was a grave mistake which made her an inspiration,” Charlotte said. “She inspired a lot of people (and) her story, 50 years later, inspires passionate individuals to continue fighting for what they believe in.”

LEARNING AREA NEWS – Maths & Science
Environmental Science Excursion
On Friday, September 23, the Environmental Science class had an excursion to New Town Rivulet where three Scientists from the Aquatic Resources branch of the Department of Natural Resources and the Environment explained and demonstrated electro-fishing. Electro-fishing is a technique that shocks and stuns the fish so they are easily caught and data can be recorded.
A range of native species was caught and observed, including a record number of sensitive macro-invertebrate species, most likely related to the large amount of rainfall we have had this winter & spring. A juvenile crayfish was caught (Astacopsis franklinii) which is endemic to Tasmania; found nowhere else on earth but Eastern Tasmania. So quite rare and ‘cute’ according to one envrio student.
Royal Australian Chemistry Institute Titration Competition
The RACI Titration Competition is a nationwide competition designed to encourage students who enjoy Chemistry, particularly its practical side. Students compete in teams of three with each member performing an investigation involving an acid-base titration. Students firstly standardise a sodium hydroxide solution (determine its concentration) and then use this standardised solution to determine the amount of acid in an unknown sample.
This year Hobart College entered teams consisting of the following students:
Charles Boardman, Romi Bunda, Nicholas Carmichael, Laura Edwards, Jaden Forsman, Freya Greenwood, Elijah Hughes, James McEwan, Ewan Michelin, Nicholas Muir, Nirmit Naik, Lachlan Rogers, Mahima Thapa, and Minh Hoang Vo.
The top teams in each State competition are invited to represent their state in the National finals and we wish Charles Boardman and Jaden Forsman all the best at this level next term.
In addition, the following students achieved excellent individual results: Charles Boardman, Jaden Forsman, Freya Greenwood, Lachlan Rogers and Mahima Thapa.
The Science Department encourages all future students to consider participation in this competition in 2023.
VET Salon Assist Hairdressing Competition
On August 23, Certificate II in Salon Assistant students competed in a hairdressing competition between Hobart College, Claremont College, and Bayview Secondary College. Winners on the day from Hobart College were Meg Lanting in the braiding section and Emelda Bowden in the Blow Dry sections. Well done to everyone who participated and created some lovely hairstyles.
Sudoku Competition
The highly contested Sudoku competition run during Home Group recently was won by Finlay Grant, with Evan Eastman and Lara Corban coming 2nd and 3rd. Star Teacher Champion was Ros Walker and Longest Solve Award went to Dharma Simpkins.
Maths Relay Success
Congratulations to the HoCo Maths Relay teams who competed in the Southern Maths Relay Competition at Rosny College recently. Five teams were entered, two of which tied for second place overall. There were challenging questions and very close competition.
LEARNING AREA NEWS - Learning Support
Learning Support provided parents/carers and young people with an opportunity to connect with a range of service providers specialising in further education, training, employment and community options post Year 12. Transition beyond college looks different for everyone and the Transition Expo provided a forum to informally chat with the providers and make valuable connections to a range of community services available.
LEARNING AREA NEWS – HPOE
College Lap
This year, the College Lap raised money for the valuable work Red Cross do in organising volunteers for their MATES program which is a befriending program for people struggling with mental health. MATES program ambassador, Conor Canning, spoke to the HoCo students before the College Lap about the unique Tasmanian Red Cross program that aims to reduce loneliness in our community by forming friendships and linking participants to fun and fulfilling community activities.
The VET Sport and Recreation class organised this year's event from the warm up to the finish line as well as collecting gold coin donations and selling sausages and veggie burgers. The HoCo community showed their support by wearing the colour red as they walked, ran, and danced around the iconic Ring Road.
It was a tight contest for those serious competitors, with the overall winners being Narryna Nicholas and Alex Hannigan. Congratulations to everyone who participated and assisted with the annual event. It was a great way to end the term.
Outdoor Leadership - Naomi King
As part of the Outdoor Leadership program, HoCo students plan, organise and lead an adventure-based activity as a major assessment called an Individual Outdoor Leadership Project (IOLP). Recently, HoCo's Naomi King developed and led her class on a trip to Lake Pedder where the conditions for kayaking were ideally suited. Naomi did a fantastic job leading her project and has recently been employed as a bushwalking guide at the highly considered Maria Island walks. Congratulations Naomi.
Inter-College Basketball Competition
On Wednesday September 21, Hobart College hosted an intercollege basketball match with Elizabeth College. With a supportive crowd looking on, Hobart College narrowly defeated a star-studded EC team who fought gallantly to come back from an 11-point deficit at three-quarter time to finish only 1 point behind with final scores 56 to 55. Stand-out performers were Harry Featherthorne from EC, Solomon Odwogog from HoCo, and Hollie Nash from HoCo who individually scored 21 points, 16 points, and 15 points respectively.
Special thanks to Anthony Stewart, head coach of the Hobart Chargers, who provided special commentary on the day, and to EC teacher Ben Christie, Anna Smee, and Craig Freeman from Hobart College who prepared their Athlete Development students for the game and provided bench and coaching support on the day.
Skin Cancer Tasmania presentation
Di Mason from Skin Cancer Tasmania and Melanoma Tasmania conducted a presentation recently with the Health Studies and Nursing classes. Skin Cancer Tasmania is a Tasmanian organisation committed to minimising the incidence and impact of skin cancer, particularly melanoma, in Tasmania. It was such a worthwhile and engaging presentation.
2022 Australian Schools Bench Press Competition
On Wednesday, August 28, Hobart College held the Australian Schools Bench Press competition, and what a fantastic event it was!
Around 200 spectators cheered on 15 competitors, with Matthew McKay from RAW Strength providing expert advice in his role as chief judge. Although this was the first time most of our students had competed in a competition like this, overall it was a high standard of lifting and students can be proud of their efforts. Caleb Kirkpatrick achieved a personal best lift of 122.5kg and several others narrowly missed personal best lifts and national records including Connor Pickering who lifted 107.5kg and Isabella Hippel who lifted 70kg which was just 2kg shy of the Australian record for her division.
Congratulations to Alvaro Canosa who benched 105kg which was a new Australian record for his weight division, beating the previous record by an impressive 7kg!
Special thank you to Jack Smith, Lachlan Johnstone, Katie Organ, and Darius Kendray from the Certificate II in Sport and Recreation class who organised and ran this competition.
A summary of the results for each division is below.

State College Basketball Championships
Congratulations to the HoCo Basketball team who secured bronze in Division 2 of the State Colleges Basketball Championships last term. Great effort team!
LEARNING AREA NEWS – Technology
Textiles
The end of Term 3 is an exciting time to be in the Textiles Studio. Design and Production students are reaching the end of their Major Textiles Project and the results speak for themselves. This student-directed design task provides an opportunity for students to explore an area of textiles design that they are passionate about and use their design thinking, creativity, production, and project management skills that they have developed throughout the course. With inspirations drawn from a range of local textiles artists and designers, including an incursion from local screen printer Tessa Macdonald from Overland Studio, students researched and developed their own design brief and then dived into the full realm of what textiles has to offer including garments, wearable art, textiles art, and other textiles items. From crocheted bags to bras, sleepwear sets to scalemale, patchwork pants, ties and dresses, deconstruction, reconstruction, bold and bright to monochrome and upcycled denim with a kiss, we have it all. Well done to all Design and Production Textiles students.
Pecan+ Cybersecurity Competition
On Saturday, September 10 to 11, students from Hobart College put their ethical hacking and deduction skills to the test and learned about cybersecurity in a practical way. Pecan+ is a national Capture the Flag cybersecurity competition for high school and college students which was offered in Tasmania for the first time this year. In addition to participating in the competition, staff from the University of Tasmania provided training in the tools used in the competition, and industry experts, including an Analyst from the Australian Signals Directorate, gave us insights into the cybersecurity profession.

Tasmanian Rock Challenge - State Final
On Friday September 16, four Hobart College acts headed to the State final of the Tasmanian Rock Challenge. The bands were MP, The Stix, Agnus Dei, and Hamish Holden (Acoustic). All bands played incredibly well and ended up winning the first two slots in the band competition with Hamish placing 2nd in the Acoustic section. We were incredibly proud of how they all performed, as well as the respect they showed to other acts and the organisers. They truly demonstrated the values of professional musicians and all acts have a bright future ahead in the music industry.
ROCK CHALLENGE RESULTS:
College | Acoustic:
- 1st. Bea & Nina | Elizabeth College.
- 2nd. Hamish | Hobart College.
College | Band:
- 1st. MP | Hobart College.

Artology - Benji Raymond
Following Benji's success at the Artology Composing competition earlier this year, his compositions were recently recorded by the Queensland Symphony Orchestra. This involved Benji heading to Sydney to workshop his piece with the orchestra and the results are amazing. You can listen to the final recordings via the audio links below.
Clarence Jazz Scholarship recipients announced
Congratulations to Finnie River (voice) and Louis Monaghan (piano) who both have received a 2022 Clarence Jazz Scholarship. Finnie and Louis will be mentored by some of the state’s best musicians leading into featured performances at the 2023 Clarence Jazz Festival.

Final Concert series from the Music Department
A big congratulations to all who have performed at our End of Year Music Concert and Olinda Groove. It has been such a privilege to have such a hard-working and diversly talented student cohort. The music students presented in these concerts have been awe-inspiring and we are incredibly proud of all who have performed.
Beyond making the music, students were inspirational role models to peers and visiting schools and courageous in the challenges they set for themselves. These core values will set up students well to be successful in life and they will no doubt continue to make a positive contribution to society.
Special thanks to:
- Our music tutor team who have provided so much support to get everyone performing at their best
- The tech crew Hugh, Jack, Jake, Ruban, and of course the glue that keeps it all together - Jarod Dance
- Creative industries class for taking all the great video shots – and of course the mastermind Ben Nelan for turning around the footage for YouTube.
- Assistant Principal Simone for all the work behind the scenes supporting the team, promoting the shows, and celebrating your successes on social media.
We are incredibly proud of the music culture at Hobart College, thanks to all involved.

HoCo Solo Shows
The Drama 3C and Theatre Performance classes presented a range of solo performances during lunchtime in Week 9 called HoCo Solos. In preparation for their end-of-year external performance exam, it was a wonderful way to showcase their work in front of a live audience.
The Theatre Performance Class will be presenting their end-of-year examination final performance of King Charles III on the main stage of the Mount Nelson Theatre from 19-20 October. Mike Bartlett's 'future history play' explores the people beneath the crowns, the unwritten rules of our democracy, and the conscience of Britain's most famous family. A future of power. But how to rule? The choice of production has a newfound relevance considering recent events with the Royal Family.

Manor Gardens Visit - VET Nursing
Nursing Students have been working hard this term to consolidate their clinical skills and linking their knowledge by looking after some ‘patients’ in the simulation lab. Many of our students have been able to attend very successful placements at Manor Gardens and Bishop Davies Court. We also saw one of our students Freya Milic take out VET Student in Schools - Student of the Year award at the Tasmanian Training Awards.
Recently, Manor Gardens ‘Club Members’ came to Hobart College and students from Nursing, Salon Assist, Catering and Music students got to showcase their talents. The feedback from the ‘Club Members’ was amazing and very positive. Well done Hobart College for providing an amazing experience for them.
Debating Team - Primary School Debating Competition
On Monday, September 12, the HoCo Debating Club members adjudicated the Primary School Debating Competition. There were fourteen debates involving primary schools from all over Hobart and a lot of doting grandparents in the audience.
If you look closely at the photo below, you'll also see HoCo Alumnus Darcy Murphy who was last year’s club coordinator. A fantastic afternoon for everyone!
VET Tourism - Student Led Tours
TOUR #8 – Nikk and Marty - Southern Adventures
Thursday 29 September heralded a grey and rainy day as the VET Tourism students headed off on an adventure South in the capable hands of tour guides Nikk and Marty. But the weather lifted as we traveled along the ‘Southern Edge’ listening to tidbits of information on the history and stories of the area we traversed from our well-researched tour guides.
Arriving at Tahune Forest Adventures, the rain had disappeared and a fascinating tour was to be had hearing all about the 2019 fires and their impact on this much loved Tasmanian Tourism icon, along with some awesome insights into the ecology of the area. Topped off by the students traversing all 619 metres of the massive airwalk amongst the tree canopy before heading out onto the cantilevered section that overlooks the confluence of the Picton and Huon Rivers. With a bit of a breeze up – this is not for the faint-hearted as some distinct wobbling of the structure is experienced!! All very structurally sound though.
After a quick detour into Geeveston to check out the sights including the visitor centre and the amazing lolly shop, it was back up the highway to the quaint township of Franklin where Nikk and Marty regaled us with some local history before taking us to the world-renowned Australian Wooden Boat Centre for a tour with Will (current FOH Manager and ex Hobart College alumni). A fascinating insight and walkthrough of this artisan shipbuilding operation, redolent with the smell of Huon pine was a great way to round off another fun day exploring all that Tasmania has to offer.
Tour #7 – Jordan and Robert - Tasman Peninsula
On the bright and sunny spring day of Thursday 15 September, our seventh VET Tourism Tour left Hobart College bound for the Tasman Peninsula led by Jordan Cowen and Robert Smith.
Our two tour guides first led us to Port Arthur where we joined a walking tour of this famous site, then onto a ferry tour to get us out to the 'Isle of the Dead’ and ‘Point Puer Boys’ Prison’. A fascinating fact that our guide shared with us was that the ‘Cat of Nine Tails Whip’ which was used at Port Arthur, only stopped being used in Victoria’s prisons in the mid 1970’s.
Next, our tour leaders led us to the amazing Remarkable Cave, which funnily enough the whole group ‘remarked’ how amazing they found this natural geological wonder was. From here we headed onto Doo Town, the Blowhole, Devil's Kitchen, the ‘Dog Line’, and the Officers Quarters Museum which can be found at Eagle Hawk Neck.
Wow! What a busy and enjoyable spring day you provided the Tourism class, Robert and Jordan. Well Done!!
Tour #6 – Sindee & Jorja – Bruny Island
An island off an island off an island was the setting for the VET Tourism Students on Thursday September 8, as we explored more of the beautiful southern region tourism offerings with a field trip and familiarisation of Bruny Island. Led by Sindee, a Bruny local, and Jorja, students were introduced to the many delights of this idyllic island.
Starting with the ferry trip over the D’Entrecasteaux Channel, Sindee and Jorja provided commentary on the Get Shucked Oyster farm, and the famous Bruny Island Cheese as we drove past on the way to visit the stunning HIBA and Bruny Island Chocolate and Houndstooth Whiskey distillery. This combined collection of eclectic and unique businesses are overseen by one of Tasmania’s Tourism icons, Michael Cairns, and his partner Bob, who also happens to employ Sindee. Nothing like having inside contacts! Getting to hear about Michael’s tourism journey and be privy to nuggets of information that are valuable beyond measure, and cannot be learned from any books, was a unique experience, much appreciated by the students!!
After touring the chocolate shop, distillery and magnificent HIBA gardens, we were ushered back on the bus to head down to Adventure Bay and do a beautiful walk along the edge of the bay through peaceful bushland out to Grass Point, learning about the whaling industry that operated out of Adventure Bay in the 19th Century. After a quick pit stop at Pennicott Cruises journey’s visitor centre and restaurant we headed back to The Neck to climb the rather high stairs to one of Tasmania’s most Instagrammable views.
All in all – an island adventure to remember!!
Tour #5 - Onyx and Elliot - Overeem Whisky & Mt Wellington
VET Tourism students just keep on going – rain, hail, or shine! And today’s tour, conducted by Onyx and Elliott gave us all three, with a little bit of snow thrown in for good measure! We started with a guided tour at Overeem Whisky where Mark Sawford took the students through the whisky distillation process at one of Tasmania’s first whisky distilleries. Learning about the process and its 5 stages, checking out the massive copper stills, and seeing their bond store first hand packed with precious barrels of aging whisky. A great way for students to learn about this increasingly popular and important component of the Tasmanian Visitor experience.
To mix it up, Onyx and Elliott then guided the students on a walk up on Kunanyi, prefaced by a quick stop at The Springs to visit the Lost Freight Café before doing the Panorama Track. Wandering up through the mist, and rain amongst lichen-covered rocks was a fabulous experience taken to the next level by Bob who introduced the students to a secret little walk/scramble (?) down to Luckman’s hut where the student tour guides heated up warming soup and handed out steaming cups of hot chocolate and coffee. Bliss!! Finishing off with a quick rundown on the history of Cascade brewery and the Cascade Gardens before heading back to college, wet, weary but invigorated.
Tour #4 - Jamila, Amber and Fens - Derwent Valley
Tuesday, August 30 saw the Tourism class head up the Derwent Valley on Jamila, Amber, and Fens Whole Day Tour. Our first stop was the Waterfall Café at Mt Field National Park to meet Rachael Power and talk to her about owning a business in a National Park that has 200,000 visitors per year, where they generate 25% of their yearly turnover in just 3 weeks at the beginning of January every year. Here Matilda had to buy her ‘Tassie Devil Beanie’ to blend into the natural surroundings effortlessly. From here our guides led us, in the rain up, to Russell Falls to emphasis the wilderness environment in its full beauty.
Our next destination was Salmon Ponds, which has a new neighbour called ‘Plenty Cider’, which has a restaurant and ‘tap room’. The tour's destination was New Norfolk. Where we visited Willow Court, the Barracks, Agrarian Kitchen, and the Willow Court Antiques Centre. New Norfolk is becoming the place to be seen and experienced!

VET Tourism East Coast Overnight Tour
Wednesday 20 of September saw the VET Tourism class depart Hobart College on their annual East Coast Overnight Tourism Tour that is organised and led by their teacher Bob.
The first stop was to meet Jo Pickering, the executive administrator at Saffire Freycinet, Tasmania’s only 6 Star resort, where it costs $2,800 per couple per night all-inclusive, but has a minimum stay of 2 nights so that you can really enjoy this experience to its fullest! Jo toured the class through the resort, then sat the class down to have a ‘chalk & talk’ in the boardroom and shared her 25 years of experience with the class. Interesting to note, that in the last 3 months Saffire has been operating at a 98% occupancy rate. Tourism in Tasmania is back and in a BIG Way!
The next stop was a class walk into Wineglass Bay, where the students enjoyed a ‘refreshing’ swim in the idyllic blue turquoise water. The class then headed to the original Coles Bay Youth Hostel for the night and learned how to cook the best and freshest Thai Green Curry for dinner. A wonderful to finish up the practical aspect of the VET Tourism course.
