From the Principal
We have reached the end of Term 1 and it has been affirming to see how everyone has continued to adapt to the ongoing challenges presented by living with COVID. Despite not being able to hold some of our usual events, there is still so much to celebrate from this term.
It was disappointing to have to cancel our annual Awards Evening, but we were pleased to have an informal celebration last week with around 70 of our 2021 Year 11 achievers. Congratulations to all the students who were recognised for their academic, sporting and cultural achievements in 2021. Highlights included acknowledging the 17 students who were in the list of top 100 TCE achievers in the State, the 51 students who achieved an Australian Tertiary Admission Ranking (ATAR) over 95, and the 146 students who achieved a Perfect Score in their pre-tertiary subject. Six students received the prestigious TASC Award for Outstanding Achievement in an Academic Program and seven students were awarded an Outstanding Achievement in a VET program. There were also several special awards which focused on attributes such as leadership, character, service to the community and personal excellence. Please see the full list of prize winners later in the Newsletter.
The Office of Tasmanian Assessment, Standards and Certification (TASC) recently published the findings of the 2021 Student Survey on Student Aspirations and Views, and it was interesting to read that the top three groups with the most impact on senior secondary study choices were parents and guardians followed closely by teachers and then friends. To further help parents to access information to support their young people, TASC has updated the dedicated section of their website at www.tasc.tas.gov.au/parents which I would encourage you to access. The page has links to useful online resources to assist with course and career planning such as Careerify, Anything Can Happen and the TCE Course Planner.
The AGM of the School Association was held recently and the 2022 Committee consists of:
- Chairperson - Marc Ransome
- Deputy Chairperson - Jennifer Poynter
- Secretary - Wendy Irvine
- Committee Members - Janine Brookes, Karen Tantari, Virginia Eddleston and Warren Lashmar; and
- Staff Members - Peter Hicks and Wendy Irvine
I look forward to working with the new Committee and welcoming other parents to the meetings over this year. Enjoy reading about the many achievements of our school community in this edition of the Newsletter and I hope you all have a happy, safe and relaxing Easter holiday!

2021 Awards Presentation
In lieu of the cancellation of our annual Awards Evening, Hobart College held a smaller COVID Safe Awards Celebration for 2021 Year 11 Achievers hosted by students Noah Gladdish and Chelsea March. The intimate affair was a wonderful way to acknowledge the academic, sporting and cultural achievements of the 76 2021 Year 11 students who would have received an award at the Awards Evening. The Award winners were treated to a wonderful performance of an original song by Chloe Jin and were able to have a professional photo taken with their award.
Congratulations to all our award winners. You can access the full program for the cancelled event below.

Anna's shaves for a cause
Hobart College student Anna Aaltink recently participated in the World's Greatest Shave and her fundraising efforts exceeded her own expectation of $250, raising $749.76! Her contribution goes towards the $11,309,982 raised so far from 14,839 shavers to further life‑saving research and support families facing blood cancer. Way to go Anna!
News from the Maths and Science Area
Life Science 2 Plankton excursion
Life Sciences students enjoyed a morning out collecting plankton from the Derwent Estuary earlier this week. Once back at Hobart College they studied them under magnification using microscopes.
VET Nursing update
Students from both classes of nursing have been learning practical skills of patient care along with the importance of diversity and communication in the health sector. Students had the opportunity to demonstrate their skills with an evacuation and safely removed their patients Babs and Mavis recently.
Science highlights
It's been a busy term down in E Block with some of the highlights:
- We started our laboratory technician assistant program, with 12 student leaders rostered on to learn with Dom in the prep room after school.
- Guest speakers this term have included:
- Dr Curtis Ho, an ex-student and now member of the Chemistry faculty at UTAS. Curtis talked about his pathway in Science, and how curiosity, enthusiasm and dedication were important for him in completing his PhD and post-doctoral research – more so than super high marks!
- Dr Chloe Lucas from UTAS, who talked to students about climate change and the UTAS project Curious Climate.
- Dr Kim Beasy, a social scientist working on green hydrogen, who talked to students about the potential and challenges associated with this technology, both in Tasmania and interstate.
Term 2 is shaping up to be just as exciting with visits from volcanologists on the cards, Science Week and the planning for the newly accredited course for 2023 Transdisciplinary Science 2 and 3 (ask your Science teacher for more information).
Q&A on the Red Square
The Student Support team has been running regular Q&A sessions on the Red Square every Thursday at lunch time, focussing on a range of topics and organisations such as Salvation Army, writing resumes and Legal Aid. On Thursday 7 April, the Q&A was an interactive health promotion on Cannabis, Tobacco, Vaping and Alcohol. Students took the opportunity to test their Carbon Monoxide levels on the Smokerlyzer and experience the Fatal Vision Alcohol Impairment Goggles. Information brochures were available and questions to Lyndell the School Health Nurse and Naomi the Youth Worker were free flowing.
Children's Day Celebration
From April 30 to May 9, The Royal Botanical Gardens will host the annual Japanese Children’s Day Celebration (Kodomo no Hi). This event is organised by Hobart City Council to promote the sister-city relationship between Hobart and Yaizu, Japan, where Tricia de Jersey (Japanese Teacher) lived , for over 15 years. Hobart college students, in Sheryl Scott’s Working with Children class made carp streamers to be hung in the Japanese Gardens. Many other schools from the Hobart Area and surrounds are also participating in the event. Last year, thousands of people visited the gardens during this period, so make sure you don’t miss this beautiful display of craft and celebration. The carp streamers are made from recycled material which can withstand being outdoors. Mini- events will be held at the same time as the display. Tricia will hold one such mini-event, with a bilingual story-telling session. If you would like more details, visit the Hobart City Council Website:

Cry Baby - Musical Update
Our legendary cast have been put through their paces learning all the choreography and songs for the show. They are learning lines and exploring their characters as they aim to bring the story of Cry-Baby to life.
Based on the cult classic John Water’s film of the same name, Cry-Baby the Musical is a rebellious teen comedy musical that, as book writer Mark O’Donnell said, is “edgier than Grease, funnier than West Side Story” and full of rockabilly tunes that keep the audience dancing in their seats. The delinquent Drapes and the squeaky-clean Squares can’t see eye to eye on anything. But when Drapes leader Cry-Baby and Square member Allison meet at the Anti-Polio Picnic and discover that they are both orphans, their star-crossed love story begins to blossom. With raging hormones, rock rhythms, and dancing delinquents, Cry-Baby the Musical brings the 1950’s to life with a rockabilly good time.
The cast were excited to hear our 19 piece all-student orchestra for the first time, busting out some rockabilly grooves, as they worked together to present a three-song teaser for the show as part of our performing arts launch. Families and students will be sent a link to the performances in the near future.
The musical opens May 26 - June 4. Stay posted for ticket details!
Success in Artology Fanfare Competition
Earlier this year, Hobart College student Floyd, flew to Sydney to have his fanfare composition recorded by the Australian Youth Orchestra at Trackdown Studios. Floyd won a national young composers composition and his piece will now be used as a "call to patrons" to be seated in a range of theatres across Australia! You can hear the composition at the start of the YouTube video below (and hear from Floyd himself at 0:37secs).
If you are an aspiring composer and want to be a part of the 2022 competition, you can access the information here: https://artology.org.au/fanfare/
Launch Concerts
Congratulations to all our music students who performed in our 2022 launch concerts for Performing Arts and Olinda Groove. There was a tremendous display of talent for our performers and we celebrated their diversity through the range of genres we were treated to! Highlights included a spectacular taster from the upcoming musical production and an energetic set from the Hobart College House Band.
The talent extended off the stage with a strong student cohort from our Theatre tech, VET Music & VET Creative Industries courses – working on staging, setup, event planning, audio, lighting and video production.
The performers and families involved will be sent a link to the performances once they are edited and ready to release.

EJ will be part of the Tasmanian Hub and will participate in two days of discussions with students from across Australia. During the convention the Tassie team will listen to national and international speakers on constitutional reform, and work with their peers in groups to suggest changes to Australia's Constitution. This year the focus is on the creation of a bill of rights. At the end of the two days the findings of the group will be presented to the Federal Senate for possible constitutional discussion.

Smoking at College
Students, Parents and Guardians are reminded that all forms of smoking are prohibited on Hobart College grounds. This includes vapes (regardless of contents) and e-cigarettes.
We encourage all students who currently smoke to quit and can arrange support for them from our College nurse, Lyndell Cooper. Please contact the College for further information.
School Levies
When paying for your young person’s school levies, please ensure you use the correct BPAY number on the back of the invoice you receive from Hobart College. This may mean updating the information stored in your internet banking as every school has a different BPAY number.
How to deal with School refusal
A lot of parents experience difficulties getting their young person out of bed and off to school every now and then. However, if your teen is regularly asking to stay home and seems upset or worried about school, it could be a sign of a bigger problem. Watch this short video in the link below to find out some ideas to deal with school refusal or resistance….and where to get the support you and your young person might need.
Passenger Code of Conduct for School Bus Services
The Department of State Growth (DSG) has released a Passenger Code of Conduct (the Code) for School Bus Services.
The Code sets out the expected standards of behaviour for students when using a bus.
It provides guidance and processes for bus operators and drivers to follow when a student breaches the Code, ensuring that all students, and breaches of the Code, are treated in a fair and consistent manner.
All operators of School Bus Services have adopted the Code as conditions of travel for the purposes of regulation 11 of the Passenger Transport Services Regulations 2013.
The Code has been developed by the Department of State Growth in consultation with the Tasmanian Bus Association (TasBus), the Department of Education, Catholic Education Tasmania and contracted school bus operators.
A shared understanding between all stakeholders of the expectations of students travelling on buses – and the consequences for any inappropriate behaviour – is essential for ensuring compliance with the Code.
